I want to start this by firstly stating that I have been actively applying for jobs since January this year. Now I stopped in March-May due to Covid-19. However, I began properly working towards getting myself a new job again in June.
By this I mean I changed up my CV, began researching how to improve my job application skills and so on. Therefore, I feel like I have built up a range of knowledge and understanding to help others through this difficult time.
I am not stating that these will get you a job, but it will improve how you approach it and just your overall experience of job finding. It is a difficult time right now for finding a job unfortunately, and the competition has gone up massively. Therefore, you have to work even harder to get that new job!
So today let’s get into
Applying for jobs: what you need to know!
Firstly I want to talk about job application forms because they can be long and its important to understand what they are.
What is an application form?
A job application form is different to your CV or resume because it is what the Company is specifically asking you about.
This just helps a company narrow done who they are looking for and for them to find out what they want in a candidate.
How to write an application form?
Now this could vary from company to company, however I will share some tips and key things you should think about when you are writing an application form.
Firstly make sure you do your research! This is so important because you are showing that you know a bit about the company and their values. Therefore, make sure you demonstrate you have done this research throughout your answers.
Most jobs ask for specific skills that they want from their candidate so it is important that you mention these throughout your application too. You also might want to think about how these make you a good candidate for the job, and mention any time in your career or personal life where you maybe achieved something that fits with those skills.
Cater answers to you
The company want an individual that they feel will make a difference in their business. Therefore, make sure you are adding a personal touch to your answers, and don’t be generic. This will ultimately help make you stand out as well.
Other tips to remember when applying for jobs
I want to also talk about other things to remember that are not specific to a job application but actually finding a job and other tips.
Use advanced search options
The majority of job sites such as Reed or Indeed will have options for you to do advanced searching. For example, choosing a job title, location, salary and so on. Therefore, I suggest you use these because they do save you a lot of time when it comes to searching for a new job.
I also tend to (if there is an option) click on the date jobs were posted too, and I tend to make sure it is set for the last couple of weeks. This way I know the job has only recently come about and I am not wasting time. This is also helpful because unfortunately, some companies do still keep their job posts online even after they have been filled. Therefore, making the search relevant to the last couple of weeks helps filter this out!
Keep applying whilst you wait to hear back from a job
Don’t worry you are not the only one, I have previously stopped applying when I got an interview/had an interview and then didn’t hear back from them. Therefore, it is important to continue to work hard and apply for jobs in case it doesn’t work out.
Therefore, you could get another interview in the process if that current one didn’t work out. You don’t just want to get your hopes up (as nice as that is), you want to prepare for anything.
Just remember that things don’t always work out and that is ok. It is always better to have more interviews than just the one interview and that falling through. So keep applying!
Story-tell during interviews
Going into detail about a previous experience when you have been asked a question by the interviewer is a great way for them to understand how you handled a situation. This is also a great way for the person hiring to see how qualified you are, and whether they think you would be perfect for the role.
Therefore, make sure you do tell a story of something you did in a previous role that is related to the question.
Always send a thank you after an interview
This is a perfect way for you to show your appreciated for the job role you have applied for, but it is also a good way to state your interest in the role. You could also briefly add anything in that you feel you missed during the interview that is relevant.
Use good references
If you have previous employers or supervisors then make sure you use ones that can help you showcase your abilities. Your references are so important when it comes to securing that role because, they will tell the new company of the role you are applying for exactly what you are like.
Therefore, of course it is important to build upon those relationships while you can so they can support your job application even more. I understand sometimes you don’t get on with managers etc, but do make sure you have individuals that can vouch for you.
I am incredibly lucky that throughout my degree and masters I had fantastic and inspiring supervisors, and I currently have a very supportive and lovely manager. But I know that doesn’t always happen.
Lastly, I know that you might feel like you want to apply for as many jobs as you can in the limited time you have. However, making sure you submit a good application is also just as important.
Therefore, spend your time working through the application, reading about the job post that the employer put up, and reading through what you have wrote. Everything matters when you are searching for and applying for potential job roles. Therefore, putting your time and effort into it will show future employers that.
