6 productive things to do before bed

I think the routine before going to sleep is so important not only for you to have a good nights sleep, but to prepare you for the next day. Basically get yourself off to a good start. I don’t know about you but I love to wake up positive and feeling great about the day ahead.

Therefore, I believe that having a routine before bed is essential in order to wind down, relax yourself and put the stresses of the day away.

Today I am sharing with you 6 productive things to do before bed.

  1. Turn off the tech

By this I mean make sure to switch off your laptop and put your phone to one side. Personally I like to do this by 8:30 pm (normally my laptop is off by 6 pm anyway), and I will put night time mode on my phone so the notifications don’t keep interrupting me. I mean I am sure like everyone else there is always a twitch when that sound on your phone goes off, and you just have to check what it is.

Also having that night time mode on means you are not religiously checking your emails, social media or messages and just helps you take a step back. Therefore, putting all the tech aside just helps to kick start my routine before bed. I definitely recommend doing this before bed.

2. Skincare

I think this is also important and productive to do before bed. Personally I love to have a skincare routine because it’s a nice little self-care moment for me to do everyday. It just means that I am making time to not only look after my skin but my health and wellness too.

Also I love to wash off the day’s work, and get rid of that dirt that may have built up on my face throughout the day. Honestly you do not realise how much gets on your face. Ultimately I just feel better overall having a skincare routine before bed.

3. Read

One of my goals for this month is to read at least two books. Therefore, I have been trying to read for at least 30 minutes everyday, and I love to do this in the evening. This is because, it helps to relax my mind and helps make me a bit sleepy. I mean if I am going to do anything before bed it is try to prepare myself for sleep.

I mean there are many benefits to reading as well. Studies have shown it is a great way to reduce stress (perfect for after a day of working), great for mental stimulation, improves your memory, encourages stronger analytical thinking skills and even increases your knowledge (no matter what you are reading).

Personally reading for me (and I am sure many others) is a great way to just escape the current moment and really dive into a different world/reality. This I think is a great and productive thing to do before bed.

4. Prepare for the next day

Honestly I cannot recommend this one enough. Preparing for the next day in the evening has been a game changer for me. I tend to write my to do list down in my book, or the top three things that I want to get done within the next day.

In addition, I tend to set out the outfit I will be wearing. At the moment I set out my sports/workout clothes because that is what I tend to do in the mornings right now. Then I will also set out my clothes for the day. Personally I love getting dressed however of course if you prefer to work in your PJ’s then go for it- you do you.

Overall I think just preparing for the next day is a productive thing to do before bed, and is great at keeping me organised. Plus you will feel so much better for it when you wake up and you have your list and clothes at the ready. All you have to do is tackle the day ahead.

5. Visualise

I realise this is probably not going to be for everyone, but I thought I would mention it because it is a part of my productive things to do before bed routine.

Now you can take this however you want, and the easy thing would be to sit and close your eyes and visualise in your mind how you want the day to go. Go through what you want to get done, and how your ideal day will go. This just helps you plan (but visually) your day, and when it comes to the next day you will feel more focused on what needs to get done.

In addition, I have a “vision board” (it is part of “The Secret” and positive affirmations etc but that is a blog post for another day) and usually I will sit down in front of it and close my eyes. Then I will say what I want from my board aloud (you don’t have to do this) and just visualise myself already having what I want. I know it sounds confusing and maybe I will do a separate post about my board. For example, if you want a new job you might visualise yourself in that new job, what you are doing, the team etc.

Overall I love doing this before bed and it just helps me focus on my life really.

6. Set the mood

I am not talking in some sexual way (I mean you can take it that way), but what I mean is think about the environment you are in. Studies show that using dim lights (or turning lights off completely) before bed help you to maintain your natural sleep cycle, and overall help you sleep better.

Personally I turn off the lights in my room around 9 pm and then for an hour just watch TV in the dark. This is just a great way to help my body get ready for bed, and does actually make me feel more sleepy. Therefore, I definitely recommend thinking about your environment before you go to bed.

  1. I have a rule that once I’m in bed and I’ve set my alarm I don’t look at my phone, and I read instead. It’s made such a difference to my sleep! I’ve also been loving having more time to do a proper skincare routine recently too! x

It sounds like such a relaxing thing to do 💫 Would love to see a post about your vision board and how you go about incorporating it into your life! One of my goals for summer is to create one but I have no idea how to go about doing it. My favourite thing to do before I go to sleep is to read an easy-going book as they have a way of calming me so that I’m in the mood to sleep 😴📚 Great post! Hope you have a lovely day 💕

    1. You definitely should it’s a nice way to wind down! I think I will put one together then and hopefully it will inspire others 🤔 that was me before I made mine but I sort of just winged it and I love it 😅 that sounds great! Definitely love reading before bed! Thank you love, and you! 💛

  3. My bedtime routine has been non existent 😂 Especially since the beginning of lockdown. I’m finding myself going to bed around 2am at night and I’m getting bad migraines in the morning. I’ll definitely be trying some of the things you suggested, mainly prep for the following day.

    1. I think a lot of people I have spoke to are similar to you! I used to be bad and go to bed late and get up late, but now I have got myself into a routine mainly because I don’t want a shock when I go back to work haha! It will definitely help have a better nights sleep and maybe even help not get migraines though! Good luck with it x

  5. I loved this post! I’m reading it close to my bedtime (which is bad, I know, I should put my laptop away haha 😭) and it motivates me to do my routine! I have a quite fixed routine but I often don’t follow it, which is too bad since I know how much I benefit from a good routine! It’s actually quite similar to yours, except I try not to visualise because it often reminds me of all the stressful things I have to do the next day!

  6. Ive been struggling a lot recently with my sleep so I defo needed to read this. These tips are so helpful, I am awful for scrolling down facebook or insta before bed (tik tok is the worst haha!). When I am back to work and wearing clothes thats not joggers and a huge t-shirt I so need to prep my outfits for the next day, that will save me so much time! xxx
