Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe

During the colder winter months there is nothing better than snuggling down in front of the fireplace with a hot chocolate. Therefore, today I will be talking you through my

homemade hot chocolate recipe!

A cup and saucer filled with hot chocolate and cream in the cup with marshmallows and a flake on the side. Next to a plate with a chocolate fudge cake and a fork.

There are many ways to make hot chocolate’s using the typical powder that you can buy and just add milk or hot water. However, today I am going to show you how to make your own homemade hot chocolate from scratch (and this is if you want a proper chocolatey drink).

I think this can be such a fun idea because you can get creative in the ingredients you want to use, but also with decorating your drink. It can also be a great idea for a cosy evening in or a date night with friends or your partner. You can have a competition over whose tastes the best and the best decoration.

Of course you can alter the ingredients to cater to your own needs and preferences. However I will be mentioning the ingredients that I like and use.

Also you can find many similar recipes as I think this is quite a common way of making hot chocolate without using powder, but I have just used this since as long as I can remember! I do use powder too sometimes as well.

1 cup of Milk

1 Chocolate bar of your choice

Extras: marshmallows or cream

What you will need:

A sauce pan

A bar of dairy milk chocolate next to a melted bowl of chocolate.

Step one

Firstly you want to get your chocolate bar (I use around three lines) and then chop it all up. Once you have done this then go ahead and melt away.

A saucepan filled with milk.

Step two

Next you want to heat the milk up in a pan over the hob. You will know when this is ready as you will start to see some bubbles forming around the edges of the pan. Don’t leave it for too long as you don’t want it to boil!

Step three

Once this happens you then want to add in your melted chocolate and give a good mix together. You should see a lovely creamy and thick end result.

A festive mug with a penguin that has "let it snow" on it's tummy. The penguin has a green scarf on and it is standing in the snow with christmas trees.

Step four

This can then be poured into your favourite mug and then get creative to add on your favourite toppings. I love to add marshmallows on top of mine. I do sometimes have cream on top but today was not that day. Of course I also chose my festive Christmas mug!

This is also a great way to experiment with different flavourings as well by adding in extracts. You could even make your own chocolate orange flavoured drink as well!

There you have it your very own homemade hot chocolate drink recipe. I hope you enjoyed and please do feel free to send me pictures of your own drinks, or share on Instagram!
